Technology & Design

Introduction

Technology & Design provides students with the opportunity to build up their creativity, problem solving, planning, and evaluation skills. There are many occasions were pupils work together to complete project work, they gain valuable communication and teamwork skills. There are three distinct areas of study within the subject - Design, Manufacturing and Technological knowledge.

Design

This stage focuses on the planning and creative part of the subject which involves learning certain graphic skills. i.e. sketching and rendering. Pupils also get the opportunity to communicate their design ideas through CAD programs ‘SolidWorks.’

Manufacture

Pupils learn and practice various manufacturing techniques from the use of hand tools to the use of high-tech machinery. Pupils love the opportunity to explore their practical and creative side.

Technological Knowledge

Pupils explore an avenue of areas related to Technology & Design; i.e. the study of electronics and materials. Pupils also touch on the areas of mechanisms, structures, and pneumatics.

Construction

Pupils will develop an understanding of the Construction Industry and the built environment. They will explore areas of health and safety in the construction industry, and the vast employment opportunities provided within the industry. The subject helps pupils develop and practice key transferable skills that are important in working life.

They will also develop their practical skills through Controlled Assessment Tasks. As well as being introduced to new CAD software (AutoCAD) to develop their working knowledge on current programs that are commonly used throughout the construction industry.

With this qualification, students may choose to progress to our GCE Technology and Design and/or our GCE Environmental Technology. They could also progress to a BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment or further study in a related area such as engineering, manufacturing or architecture. Their career route may include working as a construction apprentice while they study.
